REVIEW - THE LAND OF DECORATION

This is # 19 on my 101 list,  New Author.

"The Land of Decoration" by Grace McCleen
Product Description(Amazon.com)
A mesmerizing debut about a young girl whose steadfast belief and imagination bring everything she once held dear into treacherous balanceIn Grace McCleen's harrowing, powerful debut, she introduces an unforgettable heroine in ten-year-old Judith McPherson, a young believer who sees the world with the clear Eyes of Faith. Persecuted at school for her beliefs and struggling with her distant, devout father at home, young Judith finds solace and connection in a model in miniature of the Promised Land that she has constructed in her room from collected discarded scraps—the Land of Decoration. Where others might see rubbish, Judith sees possibility and divinity in even the strangest traces left behind. As ominous forces disrupt the peace in her and Father's modest lives—a strike threatens her father's factory job, and the taunting at school slips into dangerous territory—Judith makes a miracle in the Land of Decoration that solidifies her blossoming convictions. She is God's chosen instrument. But the heady consequences of her newfound power are difficult to control and may threaten the very foundations of her world.
With its intensely taut storytelling and crystalline prose, The Land of Decoration is a gripping, psychologically complex story of good and evil, belonging and isolation, which casts new and startling light on how far we'll go to protect the things we love most.

MY THOUGHTS: This was a very gripping book.  I could hardly put it down.  I wanted to find out what happened to Judith and her father.  If she could fix all the troubles in her life.   I wanted to help Judith with her pain and confusion.  The book takes a look at Judith's life through her eyes.  The book is full of honesty and hope of a girl who thinks she can fix everything through her faith.  And does Judith fix everything?  You'll have to read the book to find out.  It's a very moving book with full of life characters.  You should pick this one up to read.

MY RATING: 8-12

AFGHAN AND QUILT

I had plans to work on my Bee Quilt and Zebra Afghan this month.  But it's kind of went by the wayside.  Not been a good month so far.  The twins had a doctor appointment, they are also cutting their 2 year molars so they are not very happy,  and the dishwasher finally wore out.  And mother nature was even against me.  We were having a heat wave the first week of August, high 90's.  Working with a quilt or yarn is not good in that kind of heat.  I've gotten a few stitches in the quilt.  This is a picture from earlier.
This is a picture of my Zebra Afghan from earlier too.  I've gotten a couple of rows on to it.
I did finally finish that aggravating doily I'd been working on.  It turned out pretty good. Now on to the next one, hopefully it won't be as aggravating.
All in all it's not been a very productive month so far.  Hopefully the rest of the month will be better.

101 in 1001

This is 1 of 10 of number 12 on my 101 list.  Watch 10 classic movies.

If you ever want to find out what a classic movie is go to the Internet Movie Data Base.  They have 100's if not 1000's of movies there.  I watched one yesterday afternoon.  Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, made in 1939 and staring a very young Jimmy Stewart.  Here's a little synopsis about the movie.

A naive man is appointed to fill a vacancy in the US Senate. His plans promptly collide with political corruption, but he doesn't back down.
Director - Frank Capra
Cast - Jean Arthur, Jimmy Stewart. Claude Rains, Edward Arnold, Guy Kibbee, Thomas Mitchell

PROJECT 366 REWIND [WEEK # 32]

We had a pretty nice week.  The temps finally got below 90.  It's been in the high 60's to mid 70's all week.  Sort of reminds me of Fall weather.  So here is my week.

The dishwasher finally died.  Been doing dishes by hand.  YUK!  A dishwasher really spoils you.

Had my book club meeting at the library.  We are reading The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey.  This is also #83 on my 101 list.

Bella with her pig.  Love her happiness showing.

Beware, flying sand!  Luke likes throwing the sand.  But don't stand next to him.

The pears are growing, we will have fresh pears in a couple of months.  Hopefully they won't be buggy.  Hubby forgot to spray them in the spring.

Luke and Bella like to play with the Mickey Mouse bowling pins.  They sit them up and knock them over.  Then they do it over again and again.

Ugly little critter, isn't he.  It's a Cicada, they make all that noise in the summer.

Always Look on the Bright Side - Once you knock them down, you can always set them back up.

Home - is being with the twins, watching them grow and expand their lives.
