NOT JUST QUILTS.....

 It's showing signs of Spring here.  Temps in the 50's and 60's.  Lots of rainy day, with lots of sunny days.  Which is a great combination for growing.  The Tulips are up, no buds yet, and the Daffodils have bloomed and gone.  My Forsythia Bush is blooming.

 The leaves are starting to pop out on the Maple trees.  This picture isn't very good to show the leaves, but believe me, they are there.  

While I was out roaming around the yard, I saw something red in the Maple Tree...it was a Red Headed Woodpecker.  He was pecking away at the tree.

As for quilts....I put the last side of binding on the Frog Quilt last night.  It will be finished today...my post about this will be up tomorrow.

WHAT'S UP THIS YEAR AND NEXT.....

 I've almost got the Jar Quilt done.  One more piece of binding and the label and it's done.

Have you got your next quilt for 2021 picked out?  I will be working on Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam.  NOTE: If you can't make out the design,just click on the picture for a close up.) I made these for my grand kids a couple years ago.  They are embroidered blocks. Well, that will be minus Bob...he decided to take a nap on the  Quilt top.  This is Bella's quilt.

Overall Sam is for my grandson, Luke.

Something besides quilts....I am doing the I'm Following A Tree over at The Squirrel Basket.  Just pop over and check out all the info on this.  Here is the tree I've been following.  It's a really big Maple tree in our back yard.  The tree is so tall I can't get a whole picture of it with my camera.  So I pick pieces of it out to show.  This is the top of the tree.  As you can see all the leaves are gone.

And this is the middle of the tree.  It has hole in it, that is where the squirrels rest while eating.  Sorry, no squirrels today.  

These are the limbs at the top of tree.  The tree has severl branching limbs on it.  When we have an ice storm, I'm afraid the tree will split.  I've lived here 40 plus years.  The tree is still standing and doing well.  No major loss of limbs. 

This is the tree in the spring....as you can see I still didn't get the whole tree.  

That's it for today.  Well, one more thing.  Does anyone know how to fix the spacing on blogger????  I have searched and can't find anything about it.  Any tips would be appreciated.

I'm doing a monthly post on I'm Following A Tree...keeping track of one tree is the idea.  My tree is a big Maple outside the back door.  Not too much going on right now...but yesterday was a little windy...did you know when the wind blows...the leaves on a Maple tree are silver...really..

And don't ask what the yellow thing hanging on the bottom of the tree...I think it's a reflection...I was shooting this picture through the glass.

I saw this little guy sitting on the rock wall in the garden...

It's a Chipmunk...we have lots of them here....when the cats don't find them...they scamper around looking for food or just take a few moments to rest....Chipmunks are small, striped rodents of the family Sciuridae. Chipmunks are found in North America, with the exception of the Siberian chipmunk which is found primarily in Asia.

FOLLOWING A TREE....

This is my tree...a maple...

I took some pictures this month of happenings in and around the tree.  Remember this hole...

my son told me it's a Squirrel Nest...not sure about that one...it seems to close to the ground.  So I went to google to find out about Squirrel Nests...this is what I found....

• Tree Cavity Den – A tree cavity den is often first created by a woodpecker, abandoned by that bird and later claimed by a squirrel. Other tree cavity dens are created through the natural processes that can hollow out an old tree. These homes are squirrel favorites because they provide the best protection from rain, wind and snow.

So I guess it could be a nest...I've seen the squirrels sitting in this hole while eating.  but not sleeping..it must be a stop over while hunting for food.

I also got some pictures of what is at the base of the tree.  Mostly weeds

this is a dandelion growing at the base of the tree.  And I'm not sure what this is, but it has some pretty little yellow blooms...

The Brown and Black Squirrels were at it again...chasing each other up and down the tree.

You can't see too much of them....just a leg of the black squirrel.  Well, that's it for now.

TREE FOLLOWING.....

I was blog hopping one day and came across The Squirrelbasket blog.  They have what is called I'm Following A Tree....so I decided to join in.  After all the trees support us...without them we couldn't breath...they make the oxygen we need to breath.

This is my Tree.....A big old Maple just outside my back door.

I went out and took some pictures of the bark this week.  It has what I call old bark...because it is old...I've lived here 40 years and the tree was already this size when we moved here. This is the small hole... I've seen squirrels sitting here while munching on food.  They are fast little buggers...I seem to get a picture of them.

There is another hole on the other side...I had to take 2 pictures to get the whole thing.  This is the top of the hole...

And this is the bottom of the hole....

I'm afraid one of these days it will fall down....and depending on the direction of the wind.....it will take off the back of our house or the back deck and garden area.  We lost a big maple a few years ago...thankfully it fell straight into it's neighbor tree.

NATURE NOTES.......

Spring is trying to come here in North Eastern Indiana....but Winter seems to want to linger around.  We have had some cold days and warm days.  The trees are budding, the flowers are blooming and I saw the bees are out and busy.  I even saw a mosquito.  And for me Spring means the Tree Frogs are back.  I heard them singing a few nights ago.

I've decided to join in with them.  I'm surrounded by Maple Trees here at my home.  Don't know how long they have been here, but I've lived here since July of 1981.  They are big, strong trees and they are beautiful when in full leaf.  In the Fall they have some beautiful colors.  I have picked out a tree among the many around here and will be reporting on this tree every month.  This is my tree....

The tree was topped a few years ago....so it has lots of new growth.  At this time it is starting to get it's leaves.  Lots of critters visit this tree, sitting, scampering up it, or just crawling up it.  I'll keep you posted on what's going on with my tree.

Also a sign of spring around here is the Violets....they grow wild in our yard, flower beds and gardens.  They are considered a pest  around here...but they are so pretty in the spring.

This one is growing in one of my flower beds.....I think I'll leave it there and see what happens to it over the season.
